Venturing Out

Tim and James soaking up the sun at Burwood, in the beautifully landscaped grounds. Abit of a nip in the air, but not bad at all for July in Christchurch.

Tim has made lots of progress over the last week. Finally his trachy hole is completely healed. A big milestone. The mini trach tube was removed last Wednesday, and a week later the dressing is now history!

Typically there have been some more ducks and dives this week. The last two days Tim has been bed bound, tired and sore. He stopped some medication he didnt think was helping - and became super sensitive and sore. So he's got his answer and restarted it pronto.

On Tues Tim had an amazing session with his physio Kelly at he gym - 20 mins hitting a hanging ball with each arm, to the front and side. It was very impressive. But he pretty much wrote himself off for the next two days and was too tired to eat! Today he made up for it: tiger bread with salami and brie, bacon and egg pie and 8 pieces of sushi!!!!!!

Phil's 3 day visit was well timed to help brighten the days and to attend Tim's first major goal setting meeting with all Tim's team. About 12 of us were present: Tim, Phil, Viv, Kelly (Physio and Keyworker), Sam (OT), Maree (S/W), Kate (nurse), Heather (Dr), Tom (Psychologist), Mel (Kaleidoscope - career stuff), Shelley (Dietician), and Collin (ACC support co-ord on conference call). We're aiming for discharge date: Dec 3rd.

The days are full for me, providing encouragement in the gym, company on the low days, and creating delectables or buying fast food on the hungry days. I have had a lovely morning walking at New Brighton beach on Sunday, and now know my way to Northlands and The Palms shopping centres. And there's some wonderful families we're getting to know in the spinal unit.

Thanks for all the ongoing love, support and emails. Lol Tim and Viv xx

Celebration day

Smallest trachy tube has been removed from Tim's neck today. Yeah!!
Only a little dressing over a small opening that should completely close in a few days. And he can eat whatever he likes now. Great news.

Mon 13th July news flash

One or two new things ... (we arrived at Burwood a week ago after 5 days in Chch ICU).

  • Tim too uncomfortable on ventilator during night (after 12 hrs happily off it yesterday), so night nurse took him off it again. He had the cuff down all the time and could talk. This morning Dr. decided enoughs enough. Off it altogether! Size 6 trachy taken out and replaced with a mini trach for 48 hrs. To come out on Wed. Ventilator wheeled out (again - lets hope it stays out this time).
  • Tim is talking really clearly, though has some air leak with smaller trachy, until it all heals over.
  • Dietician re-organised feeds into PEG tube to be between 6pm and 10 am each day, until Tim eats enough himself.
  • SP catheter put in.
  • I'm encouraged to phone 0800 83 83 83 - yes Pizza hut, for Cheese lovers stuffed crust! Tim ate three pieces. Yesterday he ate a little pot of KFC mashed potatoes and gravy and a drum stick dipped in gravy (with cuff deflated - approved by Viviane, swallowing lady). Tim very happy. And the day before - Leish's mothers curry and rice!
  • Dr. bought about a dozen 5th year medical students in to meet Tim and I. I had photocopies of chest xrays from Middlemore, which were handed around for students to look at - of pneumothorax and pneumonias.

I've just been to have a wine with parents of an 18 yr old son, who are also staying at Burwood. A lovely family.

Christchurch to Burwood Spinal Unit

Fernie friends Catt and colourful Mark visiting Chch ICU.

Well what a week. Tim has finally made it to rehab. Yeah. And very nice it is too.

We arrived in Christchurch ICU on Thursday 2nd of July.
Five days later on Tuesday 7th we transferred once again by ambulance to the Burwood spinal unit.
Tim has settled in well and began with a slow weaning plan. Due to general well being he is now doing 12 hours a day off the ventilator. His last course of antibiotics is finished - so keep your fingers crossed and prayers going for ongoing progress in the week ahead.

Phil drove my car down to Wellington on Monday, and across to Picton for the night. After an early start he arrived at Burwood by lunchtime Tuesday. We enjoyed him sharing the settling in time, which resembled living in the middle of a railway station. Tim did manage to have a 10 minute out loud chat with him, before he flying back to Hamilton.

Tim with the team - his key worker Kelly the physio and one of the OT's (occupational therapist), both major players in his rehab programme. John on the right, came to adjust Tims wheeelchair - to further extend it. It was a second attempt as they hadn't believed the OT's initial measurements!
